HISTORY OF CANDIES AND SWEETS

The candies ... what children like so much and those who are not so children, have not always been something that we eat to sweeten our palates either for pleasure or on a whim, but when they were created years ago, they had their explanation and purpose.

They were born as a result of man's need to find a light food that would provide sustenance for his long trips, something small, but that would produce enough energy. It is also intimately linked to the discovery of sweetness and especially honey, the first sweets were created with fruit pulp, cereals and honey.

Already in Noah time, travelers prepared a sweet and juicy paste with fruit pulp and powdered cereals, even the ancient Egyptians made their candies mixing honey and fruit, and molded in many different ways. But it is from India that the discovery of using sugar to produce them comes from, that solid sugar was produced for the first time.

The name caramel comes from the discovery of sugar cane, also called "honey cane" which in Latin was called "canna melis" and which will eventually give rise to "caramel". With honey cane new and better pastry techniques were developed, the problem was that for centuries it was a luxury product available to a few, as it was in the Middle Ages.

Of this time they are also the grajeados, candy covered with sugar or chocolate and filled with nuts, crocantis, raisins... To these tablets were added aromas of strawberry, violet or musk and they were given different colors, to call attention.

It was already in 1850 when the United States began with the industrial production of candies, but in Spain, it was not applied until 1930.

From 1960 on, new technologies began to be imposed in manufacturing, until now using the most modern techniques.

Groups entry into South Africa.

Relocation of operations from Laudium to the Pretoria showgrounds. Business is set up for importing sweets and a small manufacturing plant to manufacture wafer cones is commissioned

Construction of the Richester Foods Head office and factory for manufacturing sweets in Sunderland Ridge.

The first manufactured product in this new facility JOOSY CHEWS is launched officially.

Exapnsion of products in exising facility with new equipment.

All redundant equipment sold and new equipment brought for innovation.

Deposited Candy line set up and launch of first deposited lollipop in South Africa called – Zumba.

Establishment of Richflex packaging, a packaging unit to supply the group with flexible packaging requirements .

Further innovation and launch of hero brands Éclair Pop and 2pop.

2016

Decision taken for massive expansion and to build 2 new factories, for both the confectionery and packaging divisions.

Richflex new manufacturing facility is complete and opened with brand new european equipment.

Richester Foods head office and new state of the art factory is completed and equipment commissioned.

Further expansion of the company's product portfolio into new products with new equipment planned for this phase. Wacky Bubblegum is launched
